Coke is just coal that is cooked with low oxygen. I used to work at a coke plant. (I do IT, but the business i worked for produced coke.) They would "charge" (read:fill) the ovens with coal, and then seal them shut with "mud". They used natural gas to light the ovens and they bake the coal for 24 hours.
